How to improve wear resistance
The demands on sliding materials, used in dynamic seals or slide bearings for example, are permanently increasing.
Only in rare cases there is a correlation between wear resistance and material hardness.
Types of material used are as diverse as the areas of application concerning complex conditions of wear and stress, media etc.
The presentation gives an overview from hard silicon carbide to soft carbon materials and considers strategies to increase the wear resistance depending on different materials and application cases. Determining factors are formulations, structures, special treatments like thermal processes, impregnations and coatings. Very interesting for tribological applications is a coating with diamond (sp3).
